Why do you need Valve Discs made from 304/316L stainless steel?

The passivation film on the stainless steel surface enables valve discs to withstand corrosive media such as dilute acids. 316L valve discs can even withstand pitting corrosion, preventing corrosion of the sealing surface.

Valve discs made of 304 and 316L possess exceptional toughness, allowing them to undergo slight deformation under violent fluid impacts during opening or closing, preventing fracture at the valve disc-hub connection.

316L exhibits high-temperature creep resistance. Even with short-term exposure at 650°C, 316L valve discs can maintain structural integrity, preventing valve seizure due to permanent deformation of the sealing surfaces.

Valve discs made of 304 and 316L benefit from a work-hardened surface layer achieved during machining. Combined with surface finishing, this prevents galling between the valve disc and seat during high-frequency cycling.
Standard Material Control
Changes in the composition of stainless steel directly affect the properties of valve discs. For example, the molybdenum contained in 316L steel is essential for preventing the valve disc from corroding in a seawater environment, and the chromium in 304 and 316L stainless steel castings is essential for forming a surface passivation film. To ensure the material meets the standard, we perform spectrometry to verify the elemental composition of 304 and 316L both before and after the valve disc casting process. This guarantees that your valve disc castings will exhibit excellent corrosion resistance, ensuring your system runs smoothly in the long term without catastrophic media leaks in corrosive environments.


Precision Geometric Control
Valve discs have stringent geometric tolerance requirements for their sealing surfaces; even the slightest deviation in angle or concentricity will cause leakage once the valve is fully closed. Through near-net properties of investment casting and inspection using HEXAGON coordinate measuring machines, we ensure that the valve disc’s sealing surface has exceptional flatness, roundness, and a surface roughness of Ra ≤ 0.4 μm. We also ensure exceptional coaxiality and perpendicularity at the stem connection, guaranteeing that your valve disc’s sealing surface fits precisely against the valve seat and that the project operates smoothly without leaks caused by dimensional issues.
Excellent Quality Inspection
If there are microscopic pores in the valve disc, cracks may form internally under water hammer, preventing the valve casting from operating normally. To address this issue, we perform a series of tests on the casting after the stainless steel valve disc is cast, including non-destructive testing, hardness testing, tensile testing, and airtightness testing, to ensure that there is no casting porosity or shrinkage inside the valve disc and that all mechanical properties meet the standards. Diverse Applications for Stainless Steel Valve Discs

In the pharmaceutical industry, valve discs must remain absolutely pure. However, valve discs with high carbon content may develop intergranular corrosion, creating microscopic pits where bacteria can thrive. Our 316L valve discs have an extremely low carbon content, which eliminates these microscopic traps, thereby ensuring a contamination-free seal.

The food industry requires zero contamination. When valves are opened and closed frequently, friction occurs between the valve disc and the seat, resulting in metal particles that directly contaminate the food. However, our stainless steel valve discs, with a smooth surface finish and a stable passivation layer, effectively prevent metal pickup and food contamination.

In marine engineering, high-velocity seawater flow across the valve disc edge can create localized low-pressure zones, leading to cavitation erosion of the sealing surface. However, our 316L valve discs have exceptional resistance to pitting corrosion and erosion, ensuring the edges of your valve discs remain smooth under high-speed seawater exposure.

At temperatures as high as 400°C, the valve disc is subjected to enormous pressure differentials due to pipeline shutdown, causing creep under such high-temperature steam conditions. Our 316L valve discs offer higher tensile strength and creep resistance at high temperatures, ensuring structural stability of the sealing surface and preventing leaks.

304 valve discs are suitable for industrial applications involving water and less corrosive media. However, with low carbon content and 2%–3% molybdenum, 316L valve discs offer greater resistance to pitting and intergranular corrosion than 304 valve discs, making them suitable for marine engineering, the chemical industry, and pharmaceutical applications.
Using the investment casting process, we can achieve casting tolerances of CT5–CT6 for our stainless steel valve discs. During subsequent machining, for the sealing surface, valve stem connection hole, keyway, and other complex structures, we can use precision CNC machines to achieve dimensional tolerances down to ±0.01 mm and a sealing surface roughness of Ra 0.4 μm.
The sealing surfaces of our stainless steel valve disc castings are isolated from one another with custom plastic protective covers, then vacuum-sealed, and finally packed into fumigation-free wooden crates that meet IPPC standards. These crates are equipped with internal grid dividers that effectively prevent damage from impacts during transit.
