They feature an extremely smooth surface with precision designs, such as O-ring grooves, and can withstand high pressure.

Why do you need backing plates made from 304/316L?

Wear Resistance
Wear Resistance

Both 304 and 316L are austenitic stainless steels, featuring work-hardening properties that make the surface of stainless steel backing plates significantly harder when subjected to mechanical friction.

high toughness
High Toughness

The structural stability of stainless steel backing plates made of 304/316L helps retain high toughness under continuous friction and impact, distributing the impact force evenly to reduce the risk of fracture.

Corrosion Resistance
Corrosion Resistance

The passivation film on the stainless steel surface effectively protects the backing plates from corrosive media, and the 316L grade significantly reduces the risk of intergranular and pitting corrosion.

High-Temperature Resistance
High-temperature Resistance

304 and 316L stainless steels have excellent high-temperature creep resistance, which means stainless steel backing plates can maintain yield strength even at  800°C and will not undergo tensile deformation.

Fatigue Resistance
Fatigue Resistance

304/316L stainless steel has excellent impact toughness, ensuring that stainless steel back plates made of it will not develop microcracks under internal stresses during cyclic fatigue and thermal cycling.

Precision Geometric Control

Stainless steel backing plates serve as the base or support component of the entire mechanical structure, so it has extremely stringent dimensional tolerance requirements. We offer HEXAGON coordinate measuring machines to ensure precise dimensions of stainless steel backing plates, achieving flatness of ≤0.3 mm so that they fit perfectly with the metal shims, resulting in a zero-gap seal. Even for the backing plate with multiple holes, we can ensure coaxiality remains within 0.2 mm. The high precision that we provide can ensure that your site installation goes extremely smoothly, significantly reduces installation time, and eliminates the risk of leakage in high-pressure environments.

Precision Geometric Control
Rigorous Quality Inspection

Rigorous Quality Inspection

Stainless steel backing plates are subjected to high-frequency vibrations and impacts during operation; any quality issues in them will affect the performance of the entire system. We conduct rigorous quality inspections on castings before they leave the factory, including salt spray and air tightness tests to verify the backing plates’ resistance to pitting corrosion and ensure proper sealing. Non-destructive testing is also used to detect any surface or internal defects in the stainless steel backing plate. Through these strict quality control measures, we can prevent the need for frequent replacement for you, which not only minimizes your equipment downtime but also saves your costs.

Perfect Surface Treatment

Surface treatment is a critical process that determines the corrosion resistance of the backing plate. Since the passivation film on the stainless steel surface is damaged during the casting process, we use standard surface treatments to solve this, such as shot blasting, pickling, passivation, and polishing, to ensure the backing plate surface regains a pure, chromium-rich passivation film. This restores its corrosion resistance and reduces the risk of rust caused by damage to the passivation film. With these surface treatments, we can extend the service life of your backing plates, saving you the cost of frequent maintenance and replacements.

Certified to Meet Global Industrial Standards

Your Reliable Manufacturing Partner for Custom Backing Plates

With 27 years of precision investment casting experience, 18 years of precision CNC machining experience, and 11 years of mold development experience, we have full casting capabilities, including customizing stainless steel backing plates to your specific designs, such as elongated waist-shaped holes, square locking slots, or dovetail slots.

Moreover, as a one-stop foundry, we can provide you with high-quality backing plates. Before pouring, we will use a spectrometer to ensure the stainless steel content meets the standard, especially for 316L, so the backing plates will not rust due to non-standard content. Once the castings are complete, we conduct hardness and tensile tests to ensure that the stainless steel backing plate’s work-hardening properties and impact toughness meet the standards, ensuring the castings are wear-resistant and do not fracture under repeated impacts.

Diverse Applications for Stainless Steel Backing Plates

Marine Engineering
Marine Engineering

Long-term submergence in high-humidity, corrosive seawater environments makes carbon steel backing plates highly susceptible to pitting corrosion and rusting. However, our 316L stainless steel backing plates offer exceptional resistance to pitting corrosion. They will not rust and retain extremely high toughness and tensile strength even under high-pressure seawater erosion.

Automotive Industry
Automotive Industry

In the automotive industry, backing plates are commonly used in brake pads and must constantly withstand high-frequency impacts and friction. Our stainless steel backing plates feature work-hardening properties that make them highly wear-resistant. Furthermore, their resistance to high-temperature oxidation reduces the risk of sudden detachment.

Fluid Control Industry
Fluid Control Industry

In the fluid control industry, backing plates are commonly used as pump backing plates or valve backing plates, but carbon steel backing plates cannot withstand the internal erosion caused by corrosive fluids. With excellent corrosion resistance and zero leakage in investment casting, our stainless steel backing plates do not rust from corrosion media transported through them.

Food Industry
Food Industry

The food industry requires backing plates to be absolutely free of contamination. However, ordinary carbon steel is highly prone to leaching iron ions, which would contaminate food. However, our stainless steel backing plates are highly inert due to a surface passivation film, avoiding the risk of leaching iron ions and ensuring the absolute purity of food.

  • When we collaborated with our previous supplier, the dimensions of the stainless steel backing plates they produced were consistently inaccurate, and we always had to spend time adjusting them ourselves. But since choosing Pingheng Machinery, the backing plates they provide have been absolutely perfect. Not only do they fit our systems, but they also offer a one-stop service; if any issues arise after casting is complete, they can make the adjustments themselves. So convenient!

                                                                                                         ——Dieter Weber, Procurement Manager

In the past, other factories only provided us with backing plate castings, and we had no idea what their quality was like. We often didn’t discover any problems until we started using them, which caused us a great deal of trouble. However, since collaborating with Pingheng Machinery, they have provided us with material certificates and quality inspection reports every time, allowing us to know the quality of their castings directly. What a high-quality investment casting foundry! I believe we will continue to work with them for a long time.

Q1. What is the difference between 304 stainless steel and 316 stainless steel?

They are all austenitic stainless steels. The main difference between them is that 316 stainless steel casting contains 2%-3% molybdenum, which gives it greater resistance to pitting corrosion than 304 stainless steel casting. 316L is an ultra-low-carbon variant of 316; it does not exhibit carbide precipitation at high temperatures, thereby reducing the possibility of corrosion in backing plates made from it.

Q2. What is the minimum wall thickness for investment cast stainless steel backing plates?

In our precision investment casting process, the minimum wall thickness for stainless steel backing plates in large areas ranges from 2.0 to 2.5 millimeters. For smaller areas of the backing plate, we can successfully reduce the wall thickness to 1.5 millimeters.

Q3. How do you prevent warping and deformation in stainless steel backing plate manufacturing?

During solidification and solution heat treatment, stainless steel backing plates are highly susceptible to warping and deformation due to thermal and phase-transformation stress.

To address this issue, we optimize the sprue gate position in the gating system to ensure uniform cooling of the entire backing plate, thereby resolving the problem at its source.

We also secure the backing plate with heat-treatment fixtures during solution heat treatment to directly prevent deformation. If deformation has already occurred, we use HEXAGON coordinate measuring machines to locate the highest point of warpage, then use a press machine to perform localized spot-pressing to correct the shape.

Q4. Do you accept small-batch custom orders?

Yes, we offer 3D prototyping services for efficient small-batch customization of backing plates, with delivery within 7–10 days.

Q5. What is the average lead time for your backing plates?

We use a one-stop customization service, from mold design to CNC machining. In this process, your backing plates are typically delivered within 45 days.
