Because hydrogen sulfide in crude oil is corrosive, ordinary steel can suffer sudden fracture due to hydrogen embrittlement within a matter of weeks. Additionally, the internal flow passages of the valve body gradually become clogged with sand, which also leads to leaks. In contrast, a valve body casting made of stainless steel, especially  316 grade, offers excellent resistance to pitting corrosion caused by sulfides. Furthermore, its high tensile strength and toughness enable it to withstand abrasion from sand and gravel in high-velocity fluid flows.

Both of these industries require regular cleaning and sterilization, involving the use of strong acids, strong alkalis, and high-temperature steam to clean the interior of valve bodies. Valve bodies made of ordinary metals would quickly corrode and crack under such conditions. Furthermore, under high-speed impact, ordinary metals can leach heavy metal ions that contaminate the fluid inside. In contrast, stainless steel valve body castings feature a dense passivation layer on their surface. Even when subjected to fluid impact, they never leach contaminating ions. Additionally, the investment casting process ensures an exceptionally smooth interior with no dead corners.

At -196°C, valve bodies made of ordinary metals are highly susceptible to cold-brittle fracture when subjected to sudden fluid impacts. Additionally, the valve body casting would shrink at low temperatures, causing misalignment of the internal sealing surfaces. Both of these factors can lead to internal fluid leakage. In contrast, valve bodies made of stainless steel and tin bronze retain their toughness and dimensional stability in low-temperature environments. They ensure a perfect seal between the valve seat and the valve core even in that situation, thereby minimizing fluid leakage.

Seawater contains extremely high levels of chloride ions. Valve body castings made of ordinary steel are highly susceptible to pitting corrosion, and during operation, this casting may seize up with the valve core, rendering the entire system inoperable. In contrast, valve body castings made of tin bronze are coated with a layer of copper chloride that resists chloride ion corrosion. These castings also possess self-lubricating properties, which significantly reduce the possibility of seizing with the valve core. Furthermore, the released copper ions provide natural biofouling protection, preventing the flow passages from becoming blocked by marine organisms.

Q1. How do you ensure that the pickling and passivation you perform on the valve bodies meet the required standards?

We will conduct a salt spray test to verify pickling and passivation quality: place the casting in a salt spray chamber and subject it to continuous spraying for at least 24 hours, then inspect the valve body for rust. 

Q2. What NDT methods do you use to ensure zero-defect valve body castings?

We perform radiographic testing to ensure there are no invisible shrinkage cavities or cracks inside the valve bodies.
