Rapid Prototype Pump Housing Casting

We can use some rapid prototype casting, like 3D prototyping technology, to produce the pump housing models you need. This eliminates the costs associated with engineers having to revise pump housing designs after discovering that the flow path design is unsuitable. It also shortens lead times, eliminating the need to wait for mold production. Additionally, it allows you to directly design pump housing casings with complex, curved internal flow paths.

SPECTRO spectrometer

We conduct two sets of spectral analysis to strictly monitor the chromium, nickel, and molybdenum content in 304/316L stainless steel before and after manufacturing. This ensures that the chemical composition of the finished product meets your specifications, thereby preventing issues such as intergranular corrosion and premature perforation in the pump housing after several months of use, which could otherwise affect subsequent operation.

Non-Destructive Testing

Once the pump housing casting is complete, we perform non-destructive testing, such as X-ray inspection, we will use it on the components to ensure that there is no casting porosity, like excessive micro-voids inside the casting. This prevents the risk of high-pressure leaks caused by these micro-voids when the pump housing casting is used to transport corrosive liquids, thereby avoiding potential safety incidents.

Diverse Applications for High-Precision Pump Housing Castings

Chemical & Petrochemical Industry
Chemical & Petrochemical Industry

Pump housings in the chemical industry are frequently used to transport industrial wastewater and some liquids that have strong acids and alkalis, high temperatures, and high pressures. Pump housings made of cast iron and carbon steel are completely resistant to acids and alkalis; they will corrode and leak within a few months. In contrast, chemical process pump housings made of 304/316L stainless steel could form a dense protective layer on their surface, extending the service life of the pump housing from a few months to several years.

Desalination & Marine Engineering
Desalination & Marine Engineering

Because there are excessive amounts of chloride ions in seawater, pump housings made of ordinary steel not only rust rapidly but are also prone to severe pitting and crevice corrosion. 316L stainless steel is specifically formulated with 2–3% molybdenum (Mo) and ultra-low carbon. This gives it a natural, exceptional resistance to chloride ion pitting corrosion. Its high-precision surface finish also provides resistance to marine biofouling. Pump housings made from 316L, such as those pump housing castings for seawater desalination high-pressure pumps and marine ballast pumps,  are the preferred choice for marine environments.

Food Industry
Food, Beverage & Pharmaceutical Industries

This industry imposes extremely stringent hygiene requirements on pump housings. Even the slightest trace of metal ions or bacterial growth is unacceptable. However, pump housings made of cast iron or carbon steel are highly susceptible to internal rusting due to prolonged exposure to fluid flow. However, 304/316L are recognized as sanitary-grade metals; their exceptional chemical stability ensures that sanitary centrifugal pump housings manufactured from them will never leach metal ions or impurities. Combined with the investment casting process, the internal flow channels are as smooth as a mirror, without dead corners, leaving no space for bacteria to grow and truly achieving “zero contamination.”

Water Treatment & Reverse Osmosis Systems
Water Treatment & Reverse Osmosis Systems

When pumps process wastewater, they operate at high speeds, causing the fluid to generate severe cavitation and erosion inside the pump housing. Under such physical stress, the flow passages in ordinary cast iron will quickly deform, leading to a sharp drop in pump efficiency. Additionally, cast iron pump housings are highly prone to fracture in low-temperature environments. In contrast, 304/316L stainless steel offers excellent toughness and impact resistance. Multistage high-pressure pump housings and reverse osmosis booster pump housings made from this material will not crack, whether at extremely low temperatures or under frequent high-pressure pulsations, thereby maintaining the pump casting‘s hydraulic efficiency over the long term.

Energy & Power Generation
Energy & Power Generation

This industry requires pump housings to operate continuously in high-temperature, high-pressure environments, whereas housings made of ordinary cast iron or steel are prone to rapid micro-deformation under such conditions. This deformation can cause the high-speed bearings inside to become misaligned, leading to fluid leakage. However, 304/316L stainless steel offers exceptional resistance to thermal creep. When combined with the heat treatment process of investment casting, boiler feed pump housings and cooling circulation pump housings can maintain stable geometric dimensions under long-term high-temperature and high-pressure cycling, thereby extending the service life of the pump casings.

During the NPI phase of our high-pressure chemical pump housing casting, the volute geometry was too complex for traditional tooling. Their 3D prototyping technology delivered real 316L stainless steel samples in under 15 days. I must say they saved our project timeline.

Our reverse osmosis systems operate in a high-pressure marine environment, where even the slightest porosity or pitting inside the pump housing is unacceptable. In this situation,  every batch of 316L pump housing castings supplied by Pingheng comes with professional non-destructive testing reports. More importantly, they have undergone multiple leak tests. Over the past year, we have purchased thousands of pump housings from Pingheng, and they have still maintained a perfect record.

Q1. When should we choose 304 pump housing, and when should we choose 316L pump housing?

This primarily depends on the chloride ion concentration and the corrosiveness of the liquid. Pump casings made of 304 stainless steel are suitable for handling food-grade liquids and general industrial fluids. However, if your pump housing operates in a marine environment or is responsible for handling highly acidic or alkaline fluids, we recommend choosing 316L, as it provides fundamental protection against chloride ion pitting and liquid corrosion. For more details on the differences, please click “304 vs 316 Stainless Steel investment casting.”

Q2. What are the benefits of using the investment casting process to manufacture the volute passages of a pump housing?

The investment casting process delivers an excellent surface finish of Ra 3.2–6.3 μm and dimensional tolerances of CT4–CT6 for the volute. This allows for the precise reproduction of complex volute geometries, significantly reducing friction losses within the pump housing and thereby improving the overall hydraulic efficiency of the pump. Additionally, the smooth inner walls effectively prevent erosion caused by medium particles flowing through the pump housing.

Q3. Before placing the order, can you help us optimize the casting design of the pump housing?

Yes, our team will provide you with professional recommendations based on DFM design principles, addressing issues such as core-pulling draft angles, parting line selection, and the risk of casting shrinkage, like shrinkage cavities caused by improper wall thickness transitions. We will help you reduce the costs of casting and machining without damaging fluid efficiency.

Q4. What is the average lead time for your pump housing castings?

We use a one-stop customization service, from mold design and fabrication to CNC machining. In this process, our pump housing castings could typically deliver within 15 days.
